The Coat Off My Back
Updated: Mar 10, 2022
In December I told a friend of mine that I wanted one of those Columbia onmiheat jackets… And she said “I have one.” She sent a picture of it, asked me IF I wanted it. She mailed it to me. And I got it a couple days later.
Last night as I was coming home from the grocery store at about 10 p.m. I noticed a person walking on the opposite side of the street wrapped in plastic.
I drove about a quarter-mile past and I thought to myself, I have lots of jackets… So I turned around and went back. I pulled over in the middle of the road and asked, “Do you need a jacket?” It turned out to be a young woman. She answered back “Yes I’m freezing.”
So I literally gave her the jacket off my back. She was a young homeless woman walking towards Fred Meyer. She said “God bless you.”
In in this pandemic, not even knowing where I’ll get the money to buy groceries again. I knew one thing for sure and that is– that I am wealthy in jackets.
And although this was my new highly coveted jacket. It was the only thing I could give her to make a difference. I cried all the way home. I called my friend and told her how her gift to me became a gift to a stranger.
