This might be one of my all time favorite books. I think this is a great place to for the food interested to start. The Hartwigs, have done an excellent job at presenting complex nutritional science in an easy to understand format. They have great analogies, for example they liken immune cells in the gut, to bouncers at a the exclusive “Club Body”, trying to keep the bad stuff out.
I got this first in an audio book format, through Audible. I absolutely love it. I listen to it over and over, and have gifted it to many friends. I’d buy a case of these books and everyone would get one for Christmas.
This is a great primer for the Whole30 and a primal style of choosing the foods you eat. It’s the science behind the why a person would choose to eliminate “Franken Foods” from their grocery cart. The Hartwig’s encourage choosing foods based upon whether they are more healthy or less healthy. And that by changing the food we put on our plate, we can change our health and our lives.
They have 4 tenants to help determine if a food meets their good food standard:
Does it promote a healthy psychological response?
Does it promote a healthy hormonal response?
Does it support a healthy gut?
Does it support a healthy immune response, and decrease inflammation?
